Social Media Scams

/ Categories: Fraud

At Huron Valley State Bank, your security and information safety are our top priorities. We want to alert you to a rise in social media scams.  Here are some things to be on the look out for:

1. Fake Giveaways

Who doesn’t love a good giveaway? Scammers know this and use fake contests and giveaways to lure you in. They might ask you to share your personal info or even make a small payment to claim your “prize.”

How to Spot It:

  • Too Good to Be True: If a giveaway promises something extravagant or requires payment to claim a prize, it’s likely a scam.
  • Unverified Sources: If the giveaway is from an unknown source or looks unprofessional, it’s best to avoid it.
  • Request of Personal Information: Legitimate giveaways don’t ask for personal details beyond what’s necessary.

2. Impersonation Scams

Impersonation scams involve someone pretending to be someone you know or a celebrity. They might create fake profiles to ask for money or personal info.

How to Spot It:

  • Unusual Requests: If someone you know is suddenly asking for money or personal information through a new account, be cautious.
  • Profile Details: Check if the profile has consistent and detailed information. Scammers often use incomplete or copied profiles.
  • Can you verify the identity: Contact the person through a different method (like a phone call) to confirm if the request is legitimate.

 3. Investment Scams

Investment scams often involve promises of high returns with little risk. Scammers might use social media to pitch these “too-good-to-be-true” investment or job opportunities.

How to Spot It:

  • Promises of Quick Returns: If an investment promises huge returns with little effort, it’s likely a scam.
  • Lack of Details: Legitimate investments provide clear information and involve regulated platforms.

4. Romance Scams

Romance scams involve scammers pretending to be romantic interests over the phone to gain trust and then request money or personal information.

How to Spot It:

  • Too Fast, Too Soon: Scammers often build relationships quickly and make declarations of love early on.
  • Requests for Money: If someone you’ve met online starts asking for money or personal details, be skeptical.
